Two people were killed after being rear-ended by another vehicle on Dayton Road at South Tecumseh Road around 4 p.m. on Saturday.
A man who was sitting in his car at the stop sign on South Tecumseh Road, trying to turn left on Dayton Road toward Springfield, saw the crash occur. He said a dark-colored Ford SUV was headed eastbound on Dayton Road when it illegally passed a red Toyota on the bridge over Interstate 70. The man said the driver of the Ford SUV then slammed into the back of a silver Ford Taurus that was stopped, attempting to turn left/north onto South Tecumseh. The witness said the Ford SUV was “flying,” and estimated it to be traveling “between 75 and 80 miles per hour.”
According to Mad River Township Fire Chief Tracy Young, the silver Taurus was occupied by a grandmother, grandfather, and two granddaughters. Young stated the grandfather, who was in the front passenger seat, and the younger granddaughter in the back seat did not survive, he said, becoming visibly shaken at the mention of the young girl.
Care Flight was called to take the older granddaughter to the hospital. Chief Young said the grandmother was able to “self-extricate” from the vehicle, and she was taken by squad to the hospital.
