The National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio will conduct a Weather Spotter training course in Clark County on March 25.
As a part of its statewide Weather Spotting instructional classes, the National Weather Service conducts these classes each year, just prior to the start of severe weather season.
Carl A. Miller said after participants complete this course, they will be able to provide crucial information concerning weather in their area to representatives from Dayton Sky Warn, who will then pass it along to the National Weather Service.
Miller said the continuing advancements in technology have immensely assisted meteorologists in their predictions, “but nothing beats a pair of eyes on the ground,” he said. “And those eyes need to be trained.”
Once they have completed the class, Miller said participants will be mailed an official Weather Spotter identification card with an individual number. These spotters then provide real-time weather information from their area to the NWS by calling a 1-800 number on their card, or via AM Radio.
Miller, who acts as the Emergency Coordinator for Clark County Amateur Radio Emergency Services, said AM Radio Operators are very active in relaying weather information to and from the NWS.
Clark County’s National Weather Service Weather Spotting Course will begin at 6:30 pm on March 25 at the Springview Government Center, 3130 E. Main St.—Springfield. Although the class is free, interested parties must contact Carl Miller to register, by calling 937-974-9937.
